SSPC QP3 Explained: Why Owners Spec Certified Coating Shops

June 2026 · 4 min read · Promart Industrial

Coating failures cost owners far more than coatings. SSPC QP3 exists so buyers can tell, before awarding, whether a shop's surface preparation and application practices will hold up. Here is what the certification covers and why specifiers keep writing it into contracts.

What QP3 certifies

QP3 is the certification program for enclosed shop facilities that apply protective coatings to steel, administered by AMPP, the organization formed from SSPC and NACE. AISC 420 is the equivalent standard language used in the AISC certification framework. The program audits what actually determines coating life: surface preparation quality, environmental controls, application practice, equipment condition, QC instrumentation, and the records that tie it together.

Certification is not a one-time plaque. Facilities are audited, and the audit happens in the booth and on the floor, not in a meeting room.

Why specifications call for it

Most premature coating failures trace back to surface preparation or application conditions, not the coating product. An owner who specifies QP3 is buying process discipline: verified blast profiles, ambient conditions held within datasheet limits, dry film thickness measured and logged per lot, and documented recoat windows.

For steel headed into corrosive service, petrochemical sites, water treatment, or decades of outdoor exposure, that discipline is the difference between repainting in five years and repainting in twenty-five.

Questions to ask any coating shop

Is the facility climate controlled, and what are the actual temperature and humidity ranges held during application and cure? What surface preparation standards do they blast to, and how do they verify profile? What QC records ship with the steel? Can they apply the specific system your spec calls for, and have they done it before?

Promart's coating facility is 25,000 square feet, climate controlled, and certified to SSPC QP3 / AISC 420, with a NACE Level 2 certified coating inspector on staff and QC documentation delivered per lot. We also run truck-mounted mobile sandblasting units and field coating crews for work that cannot come to the shop.
